Local people invited to observe health and care meeting for the first time

Members of the public will be able to learn more about local health and care delivery by being part of the latest online meeting of the Board responsible for the system across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

The shadow Integrated Care System (ICS) Board is responsible for agreeing, overseeing and leading on the delivery of Together We’re Better’s health and care strategy.

This brings together partners from across the local system with a focus on joining up care, reducing duplication and supporting people to live long and healthy lives.  The Government released their White Paper today in which they set out their thoughts and plans for the establishment of Integrated Care Systems across England.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board has been continuing to meet virtually once a month, and now members of the public can observe the meetings on a bi-monthly basis.

The meeting on Thursday 18 February 2021 will be available to view through the Together We're Better website. The agenda will include a system story, items looking at health inequalities, how the health system is performing and an update on the COVID-19 vaccination programme.

Prem Singh, Independent Chair for Together We’re Better, said: "It is really important that members of the public can now see how their shadow ICS Board makes decisions for their health and care and stay up to date with what is happening in their local health and care system.

“I have been clear that I wanted the meeting to be in public, albeit virtually, since I started in this role just before Christmas.  The timing of this step, alongside the direction of travel that the Government have stated, shows our commitment to transparency and accountability.

“This is a genuine opportunity for us to work together to really help improve the health of our population, improve their care experience and tackle some of the health inequalities that exist across our area whilst getting the best use of limited resources. ”

The shadow ICS board is governed by the following key principles:

  • The needs of citizens, patients, carers and their families are at the heart of all our decisions
  • Health and care leaders across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent will hold each other to account
  • Social care, mental and physical health will be treated equally
  • While the planning and strategy will focus on the health and care system in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent in its entirety, delivery will be local and differentiated to the need of local people
  • Our solutions will need to deliver national and locally determined targets
  • Fundamentally this is about integrating local services and improving both the experience and the outcomes for local people.
